Sup folks?! Today we're gonna continue talking about 13 reasons why, so get tunned, pick up your pencil and let's get started, shall we?


#1. Rewind the tapes
Translation: Rebubinar as fitas
Sentence: You must rewind the tapes to know the truth.

Translation 1: Pomada
Translation 2: Uma pessoa idosa
Sentence 1:  Ointment time, baby boy!
Sentence 2: Mr Williams wishes he was a teen, but he is just an ointment.

#3. Branch
Translation: Galho
Sentence: Can you believe me? A couple was making out under a branch 2 minutes ago!

#4. Helmet
Translation: Capacete (usado na série pela Hannah para chamar Clay - metonímia) 
Sentence: Hey helmet! come over here!


#5. This ship has sailed
Translation: Usado para se referir a uma oportunidade perdida ou uma situação já superada.
Sentence: Have you already forgotten Jake? - Of course! This ship has sailed!

#6. Stake
Translation: Apostar
Sentence: I stake 10 dollars on that girl.

#7. No-go
Translation: Proibido(a)
Sentence: This is a no-go area, please do not overstep.

#8. Soaking wet
Translation: Encharcado
Sentence: I got home soaking wet yesterday due to the rain.

#9. Hook up with
Translation: Curtir, estar, conversar e/ou ter relações sexuais com alguém
Sentence: I heard Jessica is hooked up with Alex, is that right?

#10. Take place (=happen)
Translation: Acontecer, ocorrer
Sentence: My birthday party will take place in my flat at 9.

Today's class will be focoused on the new black: 13 reasons why! The series is originally from Netflix and its aims is on critisizing the bullying culture which take place up to now, not only in america but in the entire world, that most of the time leads the victim to commit suicide. So, shall we brush up on some new vocab?

Hoje a aula será focada na nova sensação do momento: 13 reasons why! A série é original do Netflix e seu enfoque é criticar a cultura de bullying que existe até os dias atuais, não só nos EUA mas no mundo todo, que muitas vezes leva a vítima a cometer suicídio. Entao bora aprender novo vocabulário?


13 REASONS WHY
Part 1


#1. Settle in (v.)
Translation - instalar-se, acomodar-se, adaptar-se
Sentence: I'm trying to make friends, but this school is not easy to settle in.

#2. Wishy-washy (adj.)
Translation - indefinido (cor), sem caráter (pessoa), aguado (ideias)
Sentence: I can't believe he sent everyone that pictures.. He is such a wishy-washy, I hate him!










#3. I don't  give a shit (or a "damn) (slang)
Translation - Nao dou a mínima 
Sentence: I don't give a shit for your opinion!

#4. Catch up (v.)
Translation - Botar o papo em dia
Sentence: Hey! How long no see you! Wanna catch up someday?

#5. It's not my thing (exp.)
Translation - Não é minha praia
Sentence: Listening to tapes is not my thing, you know?

#6. Keep in touch (exp.)
Translation - Mantenha-se em contato, vê se não some!
Sentence: Bye dear, keep in touch!

#7. Pop up (v.)
Translation - Surgir, aparecer inesperadamente
Sentence: Her message popped up automatically on the screen.

#8. Pass sth on (v.)
Translation - Passar, transmitir.
Sentence: It was you who passed my photos on, is that right?

#9. Language! (exp.)
Translation - Olha a boca!
Sentence: My mom keeps saying "language" to me when I say swearwords.

#10. Take for granted (exp.)
Translation - Tomar por certo, subestimar
Sentence: Don't take me for granted, you don't know what i'm capable of.

1º episode - Vocabulary
PART 1 (out of 2)


To begin with the vocab list, you need to know the meaning of "the fosters". If you are foster, it means you'd been adopted by foster parents; not birth parents/kids.

#1. Damage
Translation - Danificar
Sentence: You've damaged my life too badly. Step out!

#2. Inmates
Translation - preso, detento
Sentence: You really want to be one of those filthy inmates? 
Think over!

#3. Pick fights
Translation - Comprar briga
Sentence: My son's recently pickin' up fights on the street. I don't know want what to do! 

#4. To be in a bind (with)
Translation - Estar num aperto, sufoco
Sentence: I've got no job, that's why I'm in a bind with paying bills.

#5. Juvie
Translation - Reformatório, casa de correção.
Sentence: Can you believe Callie's already been in juvie? She robbed a band, back then she was 15 so she couldn't go to jail.

#6. Dyke
Translation - Lésbica, sapatão 
Sentence: What is the matter with my dyke foster parents?
Are you prejudiced or what?

#7. Mushy
Translation - mole, sentimental
Sentence: Please, stop crying! Don't play mushy with me, I don't buy it.

#8. Group home
Translation - Orfanato
Sentence: Mom, what happens when a kid has no parents?
They go to a group home until they find a family, darling.

#9. Scholarship
Translation - Bolsa de estudos
Sentence: I got a scholarship to Denver. Isn't that cool?

Don't confuse with "sponsorship" which means "patrocínio".

#10. Take it down a notch!
Translation - Abaixe o tom, acalme-se
Sentence: Ei, come on. Take it down a notch, alright? I just wanted to help.

#11. Curfew
Translation - Toque de recolher
Sentence: It's not permitted to go out tonight due to the curfew.

#12. Knucklehead (slang)
Translation - Idiota, cretino
Sentence: Shut your mouth up, knucklehead!

#13. Pimp
Translation - Cafetão 
Sentence: Is he that pimp from the suburbs everyone is talking about?

#14. Narc
Translation - Abreviação de narcóticos = "narcotic".
Sentence: What are you doing? Drug and narc substances are not allowed in here!

#15. Sneak out
Translation - Sair, fugir
Sentence: I had to sneak out of town. I was being beaten by my former foster parents, you know?

PHRASAL VERBS - part. 2


#1. Drop someone off
Meaning - To deliver someone at a particular place.
Translation - Deixar alguém em algum lugar
Sentence: Could you give me a lift and drop me off at the airport?!

#2. Be grounded 
Meaning - To be isolated from leisure.
Translation - Estar de castigo
Sentence: Barry was never grounded for low grades. He is such a genuine person!

#3. Be yanked
Meaning - to catch something, perhaps an object from someone.
Translation - Ser arrancado(a)
Sentence: The evidence was yanked from the cop's hand.

#4. Cut someone off
Meaning - To make someone stop to talk, to interrupt
Translation - Interromper alguém
Sentence: Barry cut the mayor off during his speech.

#5. Be trapped
Meaning - To be locked up in a closed room. 
Translation - Estar preso (numa cilada)
Sentence: I can't believe I'm trapped in this filthy room!

#6. Cordon off 
Meaning - To isolate an area in order to not compromise the evidence, to seal off
Translation - Isolar uma área
Sentence: The cops cordoned off during Barry's mom murder investigation.

#7. Binge-watch
Meaning - To watch multiple episodes of series in a row
Translation - Maratonar
Sentence: Wanna binge-watch today Iris?! What about Netflix and chill, huh?

#8. Rip out
Meaning - to tear, to remove 
Translation - Rasgar, remover
Sentence: Oh, damn it! I ripped out my suit.

#9. Back up
Meaning - to support someone, give assistance
Translation - Apoiar, auxiliar
Sentence: Can you back me up tonight Joe? I've got a date.

#10. Screw up
Meaning - to do something wrong
Translation - Vacilar, estragar tudo
Sentence: I ran back in time twice Iris, I'm sorry I screw up!

#11. Hit (things) up
Meaning - to bump into something, to colide
Translation - Acertar, atingir
Sentence: I can't see a thing! I'm hitting everything up!

#12. Feel like
Meaning - to be in the mood for something
Translation - Estar afim de
Sentence: I feel like Lasagna today!

#13. Pin for someone
Meaning - to like someone
Translation - gostar de alguém
Sentence: It's hard to pin for someone you can't have.

#14. Hold off on
Meaning - to pull off, postpone
Translation - Adiar, esperar
Sentence: There are things we can't simply hold off on, like saving people from monster.

#15. Catch up
Meaning - To talk after long time not seeing someone, to reach
Translation - Botar o papo em dia, alcançar
Sentence 1: Run Barry! Catch him up!
Sentence 2: Why don't we catch up someday?

#2. Leap
Translation - Salto, pulo
Sentence: The nurse made a leap when first saw a man coding.

#3. Wasp
Translation - Vespa
Sentence: Why is there a wasp in my room?

#4. Bland
Translation - Suave, brando
Sentence: Today is so bland that I'm thinking strange, you know?!

#5. Savior
Translation - Salvador
Sentence: Lord is my savior!

#6. Handicap
Translation - Desvantagem
Sentence: I've got handicap comparing to Meredith. She is Ellis' daughter!

#7. Rousing
Translation - Inflamado
Sentence: You injury is rousing, we have to run some tests.

#8. Bouncy house
Translation - Pula-pula
Sentence: This hospital is not a bouncy house where you can play!

#9. Swamped
Translation - Inundado
Sentence: Where did this water come from? It's everything swamped, probably the pipe broke down!

*pipe = cano

#10. Leash
Translation - Coleira
Sentence: Do you see a leash around my neck? I don't belong to anyone!

#11. Stooge
Translation - Fantoche
Sentence: Don't treat me as a stooge!


#12. Cranky
Translation - Excêntrico, bravo
Sentence: Don't be so cranky Christina!

#13. Slit (also a verb)
Translation - Incisão 
Sentence: Make a short slit over here and there.

#14. Stat
Translation - Imediatamente
Sentence: Book a room, stat!!

Phrasal Verbs are structures combined wtih verb + preposition(s) which can be separable or unseparable.

#1. Pick on 
Translation - Pegar no pé
Sentence: Stop pickin' on me and leave me alone!

#2. Kick in
Translation - Entrar em vigor
Sentence: The new gadget is finally starting to kick in.

#3. Shut down
Translation - Desligar
Sentence: Barry, shout out the cameras so that she can't see you.

#4. Cover up
Translation - Tampar
Sentence: Cover up the corpse, Joe.

#5. Settle in
Translation - Instalar-se, acomodar-se
Sentence: I strongly believe I'll be able to settle in here.

#6. Blow in
Translation - Chegar repentinamente
Sentence: I was caught off guard when The Flash blew in yesterday.

#7. Sort out
Translation - Resolver
Sentence: I've got all sorted out.

#8. Catch on
Translation - Ficar popular, compreender
Sentence 1: The Flash is gonna catch on, trust me!
Sentence 2: This subject is hard to catch on.

#9. Patch someone up
Meaning - to give basic medical careto someone that helps them temporarily. 
Sentence: Don't worry about injuries Bar, I'll patch you up!

#10. Line up
Translation - Fazer fila
Sentence: Line up, guys! ya'll take pictures!

#11. Pass out (also "faint")
Translation - Desmaiar
Sentence: Professor ?? I think he passed out.

#12. Look after
Translation - Cuidar de alguém
Sentence: Joe, thanks for looking after my son all these years.

#13. Run out of
Translation - Acabar
Sentence: He ran out of energy, beat him now!!!

#14. " (It) turns out"
Translation - Acontece que
Sentence: I thought you were the villan. Turns out Dr. Weels was the bad guy this whole time.

#15. Whip up
Translation - Fazer correndo
Sentence: Cisco, whip up this machine. I'm running out of time!

Sentence: I trooped what you said to the situation, you know? Everything makes sense now...

Translation - Submeter a analise
Sentence: I vetted your school records and congrats, you were accepted.

#5. Steer
Translation - Conduzir, guiar
Sentence: My mum steered the marathon training.

#6. Inherit
Translation - Herdar
Sentence: I inherited my dad's heritage.

#7. Pot
Translation - Por em conserva
Sentence: Babe, pot the vegetables for me?

#8. Log
Translation - Derrubar arvores

#14. Flap (informal)

Sentence: The principal resents from being unfair.
